Families Pay Over The Odds
British parents face paying a 'school holiday premium' of up to 89% this summer. That's the findings of a survey by bank Morgan Stanley. In the worst case a family of four going to France would pay £887 in September but a whopping £1667 in August. Better stay closer to home this summer. Visitors to the Lake District were the only tourists who were spared from any price increase at all over the school holidays.
Trainspotting
Anyone whose kids are mad about trains should make a beeline for Yorkshire this summer. The world’s most famous steam engine, The Flying Scotsman, will be making a twice-daily “Ride the Legend” service from York to Scarborough every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (July 5 – Sept 8). Round-trip tickets cost £30 adult, £20 child, with a first-class option also available, and picnic hampers can be ordered.

Monkey Magic
You don’t have to travel long-haul to encounter monkeys in the wild anymore. At the Italian Gardens of Trentham in Staffordshire they're just about to open their very own Monkey Forest. Visitors can watch more than 150 Barbary Macque monkeys swinging through the trees. This acre of woodland, which opens 19 July will be the only place in Britain where visitors can enjoy direct contact with monkeys.

Amaizing Mazes
Master maze maker Adrian Fisher, has planned a bumper crop of mazes for summer 2005. More than 30 Fisher-designed cornfield mazes, each featuring unique and complex designs will reach the right height for eight to ten weeks (early July to mid- September) before the crop is harvested as cattle feed. It takes an average of 1½ hours for a puzzled pedestrian to find his way out of one – so it’s a great way to keep a family occupied for a morning or afternoon.
