Beach Safety Tips - In association with
There's nothing like a day at the beach with your family, particularly when the weather is warm and sunny. But crowded beaches and busy coasts can also be dangerous places for children. Here are some top tips, courtesy of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, for keeping your family safe at the beach this summer.
Baywatch Beaches
Go to beaches which are manned by lifeguards. Details of these beaches are available at the RNLI beach lifeguards website by clicking here.
Lost And Found
Look to see if a Beach Safety Scheme is in place on the beach where you are. If you take part, you can get wristbands or tickets for children, with contact details for if they are separated from you. Arrange a meeting place in case you are separated. Good places include either a purpose-built Lost Children Post, lifeguard station or a beach shop.
Blown Away
If your child is using inflatables, make sure they are being supervised. The inflatable should also be secured to the shoreline, ideally held by an adult. Remember, an inflatable can be easily blown away from the shore even with a slight breeze.
A Head For Heights
Keep away from cliff edges, as they can be slippery and unstable, particularly when wet.
The Tide Is High
Caves and coves are great places to explore, but can be cut off by tides. Ensure that you know what time high tide is and keep a vigilant eye out.
Snacking And Swimming
Eating and drinking before swimming may give you cramps. To be completely safe, you should allow at least an hour between eating a large meal and going swimming.
