The end of an era

Christmas won't be Christmas without TOTP

It's almost as traditional as the roast turkey, but this year there will be something missing from the yuletide celebrations. The TV powers-that-be have decreed that this year there won't be a Christmas edition of Top of the Pops.

Even though the series came off the air in 2006, the Christmas day edition has continued to be the one programme that traditionally brings the family together.

Last tear's special was watched by an audience of 3.24 million and featured Girls Aloud, The Proclaimers and X Factor winner Leon Jackson.

Even though the weekly number one spot in the charts doesn't hold the same kudos as it used to when the programme first aired 43 years ago, the halloed Christmas Number One is still considered a big deal in the music industry and always marked the finale of the show.

It's not surprising therefore that pop acts that appeal to both the young and the not so young – including the Ting Tings, Kaiser Chiefs and Adam Ant have called for the show to be resurrected.

But there could be salvation in sight as X Factor supremo Simon Cowell today waded into the debate saying;
“I've got a suggestion for them. If they don't want it, I'll take it. I'm serious. They can give it to me or I will give them a bit of money.

Why end the tradition? It's like not having Christmas pudding. I don't believe in breaking with tradition.This year has been phenomenal for British music and we should celebrate by making Top Of The Pops at Christmas a fantastic event. I've made them an offer and let's see if they accept.”
