Treat 'Em Ruff 28 August 2008 Expert recommends dog training techniques for toddlers
The training techniques focus on rewarding good behaviour rather than punishing misdemeanours. Dogs respond well to edible treats but verbal praise, a scratch behind the ears or a game of Frisbee are all good rewards. Similarly, Pat Moore suggests using a few sweets or a trip to the playground to reward a well-behaved toddler rather than threatening them with the naughty step. However, using top-level treats every day is not recommended. 'If you use the best treats all the time - such as a chew - it loses its value and isn't so attractive. While we aren't child psychologists, it seems that parents should act in a similar way, keeping a range of rewards for different circumstances,' said Ms Moore. At Battersea, they use food treats when a dog has done particularly well - toys can be used very sparingly for kids. Body language is also important, with tone of voice and facial expression playing a big part in making sure your message is clear. Consistency is also just as important for toddlers as it is for puppies. The toddler training advice is to be published in the Battersea Cats and Dogs Home magazine 'Paws' next week.
