Turfed Out Of School
16 May 2008

Sixth formers sent home after drunken prank

Sixth formers leaning against treeThe entire sixth form of a school in Aberdeenshire was sent home on their last day at school after a teenage prank caused chaos.

Pupils at Banchory Academy in Aberdeenshire turfed over their common room floor after some of them had gone out drinking on their last ever day at school. As a consequence all 100 sixth-formers were sent home – and one 17-year-old was charged with breach of the peace. The school authorities said the decision to send the pupils home was taken because of the disruptive effect the sixth-formers were having on other pupils who were sitting exams.

A school spokesman said: 'Banchory Academy is extremely disappointed that the disruptive actions of a number of sixth year pupils has spoiled what was due to be an enjoyable day of activities to mark their last day of term. There was evidence that some pupils had been drinking and given the size of the year group the head teacher has had no choice but to send all of them home, both for their own safety and to avoid any disruption to standard grade exams under way today. This will be particularly disappointing for those sixth years who were genuinely looking forward to their last day of term.'

It will cost several hundred pounds to clear up the mess. But at least with all the pupils being sent home no-one can be accused of being a 'grass'!
