The Wii Family Unit
7 May 2008

Could computer game be a source of family unity?

nintendo wiiThe mastermind behind the Nintendo Wii has designs on the British family. Shigeru Miyamoto the man responsible for the massive computer hit that is the Wii, believes that his computer game could be the thing that provides a new sense of cohesion to modern-day families.

'In Japanese households suddenly new conversations are springing up between fathers and mothers, fathers and daughters, talking about Wii Fit,' Miyamoto told The Times. 'We would love that to happen in Britain.'

Asked whether he didn't feel responsible for creating a generation of kids who'd rather be in front of a console than out in the fresh air, Miyamoto says: ' Spending too long, staying in and playing any video game is not good. I always tell my children to get out on a sunny day and I, myself, went jogging in Central Park yesterday. But I do my stretching on Wii Fit. They work together.'
