Competitive Sleep Syndrome
March 29 2007

Who gets the least sleep in your household?

tired womanA new survey into babies and parents' sleep patterns has uncovered a new syndrome that many new parents may be familiar with – Competitive Sleep Syndrome. That's the situation where parents argue with each other over who has had less sleep. It also covers the scenario where parents compete with other parents over how well their child is sleeping at night.

According to the research by Tomy, one in five of us are guilty of bragging about how our child is sleeping through the night. Half of us argue with our partner over who's getting more sleep (only half?!)

Perhaps the truest fact is the discovery that up to a third of all parents can lose up to two months sleep over the course of the first year of their baby's life.

As you'd imagine from such a survey – men are targeted for not responding to their baby's cries. Only 12% of women believe their partner responds to their child's cries within the first 30 seconds, while almost 50% believe their partner can sleep through a baby's crying.

Interestingly, 38% of the 500 parents surveyed said that their child wasn't sleeping through the night by the age of one.
