Court rules that 13-year-old must terminate pregnancy

An Italian court has forced a 13-year-old girl to have an abortion against her wishes, after ruling that the teenager's mother had the final say.

The case of Valentina, which has been widely reported in Italy, came to the courts when the teenager became pregnant by her 15-year-old boyfriend. She didn't wish to have the termination, but the court in Turin ruled that because she was a minor the decision would pass to her mother who insisted on the abortion.

The girl is now in a psychiatric unit and was quoted by the newspaper La Stampa as having said; 'You made me kill my baby now I'm going to kill myself.'
