Church Schools' Three Degrees
January 17 2007

Are you religious enough to get your kids into a church school?

woman prayingThe Church of England, in an attempt to make the rules governing admission to church schools clearer and more transparent, has come up with a three-tiered system to evaluate parents'. Under the new system, parents will be judged to either be 'known to the church', 'attached to the church' or - the best category - 'at the heart of the church'. If a situation occurs where too many parents are judged to meet the top tier's criteria, then places would be allocated according to proximity to the school or by lottery.

Philip Williamson, head of a very popular church school, told The Times; 'If you want subjective criteria for oversubscribed schools, this is wonderful. They are not transparent, they are not objective. There is no way of moderating what one person construes as known to, the church, attached to the church or at the heart of the church. It is ludicrously unfair.'

How to tell if you're religious enough...

Do you have a relative who goes to the church?
If yes, then you'd be 'known to the church'.

Do you make an effort to attend the main services of the year?
Then you might be 'attached to the church.

Are you on first-name terms with the Vicar and a member of the church flower committee?
Then you're definitely 'at the heart of the church'!
