Girl's Airport Conveyor Belt Ride
13 December 2007

Two-year-old checks herself in at Manchester

baby at airport check inThe parents of a two-year-old girl are counting their blessings after their daughter was whisked away by a baggage conveyor belt at Manchester airport. The toddler climbed on to the belt while her parents were checking in for a flight to Islamabad.

Her father alerted airport officials when he noticed she was missing, but as he'd seen her wandering off in the airport hall search efforts were concentrated there. It was only when an engineer investigating why the four-mile-long conveyor belt system had stopped that the child was found.

' Her clothes were torn and she had cuts and bruises. She was lucky not to have been more seriously hurt,' a source told the Manchester Evening News.

The girl was taken to casualty for an overnight stay, but later released.

An airport official said: 'We are extremely concerned about this incident and are working with the ground-handling agent and the Health and Safety Executive to understand exactly how it occurred and to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure this cannot happen again.'
