The Perfect Sandcastle
September 30 2005

Scientists come up with the perfect sand:water ratio

bucket It's good to know that scientists have plenty of important things to busy themselves with. Take, for example, the brains at America's illustrious MIT college who have come up with the perfect recipe for making a sandcastle.

Extensive research into the relationship between sand and water by the boffins came up with a 'mathematical model to describe the inherent stability of wet sand'. Translated into English, that means they found the best way to make a sandcastle - it's eight parts sand to one part water.

Peter Schiffer from Pennsylvania State University, wrote in the journal Nature Physics: 'The work is an important advance and opens the door to more systematic studies of how the addition of interstitial liquid affects the dynamics of such materials.' That and it keeps the kids happy!
