Infant's river rescue caught on camera

The Brazilian cameraman who was called to shoot the rescue of an animal floating in a bin bag in a park lake got a lot more than he bargained for the bag was found to contain a baby.

Alerted by the sounds of what had seemed like mewing, park worker Jose da Cruz was filmed wading into the water and fishing out a tiny black bag attached to a piece of wood. But when he opened the bag he was shocked to find a tiny baby girl inside.

The two month old child was quickly raced to hospital near Sao Paolo, where she's being looked after by nurses, amidst a barrage of international media attention. Hospital spokeswoman Dr Claudia Guimaraes said: 'She is in good condition. It's a miracle she survived the heat and somehow didn't drown.' The baby's mother has since been arrested, but denies throwing the child into the lake, claiming instead that she gave it to a homeless person to look after.
