'Big Mother' Walks Out
October 28 2005
'Live' Birth Contestant Leaves TV Show

big brother The woman who gave birth 'live' on air in the Dutch version of 'Big Brother' has walked out of the contest. 27-year-old Tanja left with her baby after being accused of being a bad mother by fellow contestants. 'I want to enjoy maternity, not feel annoyance,' she told a Dutch newspaper, adding 'I'll be happy when I am amongst normal people again.'

Tanja (contestants last names are not given) made TV history on October 18th when she gave birth to daughter Joscelyn Savanna on October 18th. The birth was broadcast eight hours later on the Talpa TV station and is the latest in a string of controversial incidents to have featured on various versions of 'Big Brother' since the series started in the Netherlands in 1999.

By leaving the house, Tanja has passed up on the opportunity to win the €400,000 (approximately £270,000) first prize. Tanja complained about her fellow housemates criticising her for smoking too much during her pregnancy with one housemate suggesting the baby should be breast-fed on tar.

Demonstrating perhaps that she can't have watched too many previous editions of the show, she said the housemates were childish, talkative and manipulative and refused to give her any peace or understanding after the birth.

The programme editor said it was a shame she was leaving because she had been 'good television.
