Mid-air Delivery
September 26 2006

Baby born on transatlantic flight

airplaneUnchecked baggage on planes are currently a cause for alarm but yesterday the crew on BA flight 215, from London to Boston, had to deal with a very surprising package - baby Nadine who was delivered by flight attendants, with the help of two medical students who were on board.

The arrival of the little girl, who was about six weeks premature, meant the plane had to be diverted to land at the nearest airport in Halifax, Canada.

Crew members spotted Nadine's mum, thought to be an Egyptian travelling on a US passport, looking 'uncomfortable' during the pre-flight emergency procedures demonstration. However, it was first thought that she was just a nervous flyer.

After landing, the baby remained on board until an incubator was delivered and the mother and child were taken to an airport medical facility.

For uncomplicated single pregnancies, BA restricts travel beyond the end of the 36th week of pregnancy.

So does a baby born mid-flight automatically get dual citizenship of both countries? Raisingkids checked with BA's press office and unfortunately this is a myth! Babies of married mothers become citizens of their father's country whilst babies of unmarried mothers take on their mum's citizenship.
