Ectopic Pregnancy 'Not An Emergency'
July 26 2006

Woman denied ambulance nearly dies from the delay

red lightA 30-year-old woman who nearly died after emergency services refused to send her an ambulance for an ectopic pregnancy has been telling of her near-death experience.

Andrea Smith, was barely conscious when her mother called 999 asking for an ambulance. Unbelievably, the operator told her that it was not an emergency. Andrea's father was then called to drive his daughter to the hospital.

By the time she arrived in hospital, Andrea's fallopian tube had ruptured and she almost died on the operating table. Sadly the baby was lost.

'The nurses said I was at death's door,' Andrea, who is a mother of one, told The Mirror. Her complaint against the emergency services is now being investigated.
