Weekend Woes
January 26 2006

Family time is being eroded by working on weekends

office worker As working weekends becomes the norm, family life is suffering. That's the opinion of think tank, The Relationships Foundation, which found that four in ten parents with young children regularly find themselves working on weekends. The research also found that 40% of parents of children under five found it hard to get home during the week to see their children before they go to bed.

'There is no doubt that weekend working eats into time that parents and children can spend together,' said Michael Clark from the Relationships Foundation. 'Long and atypical working hours stunt the amount and range of activities that parents and children can do together or, in fact, that the children are able to do at all.'

'With the Government's desire to put good parenting near the top of its agenda, it is very surprising that they should be considering an extension to Sunday trading which could be so detrimental to family life.'
