The Baby With Three Mums
October 25 2005
Sisters work together to give infertile sister a baby

baby on a blanket The amazing story of two sisters who helped a third sister have a baby will be shown on TV this week. Alex, who was left infertile following treatment for cervical cancer, was given an egg by her twin sister Charlotte and a womb to house it in by her other sister Helen. Her husband, Shaun, provided the sperm.

Alex gave birth to baby Charlie, four months ago, and described her son as 'an angel. I am forever indebted to my sisters.'

Sister Helen said that while she was sadder than she'd expected to give Charlie to her sister, she would happily be a surrogate mother all over again if Alex wanted another child. 'I'm just a tummy mummy,' she explains. 'I just carried the baby for Alex and I didn't see it as giving him away.'

The sisters' story is being told in a BBC documentary ONE life - Three Sisters Make One Baby, on 31 October.
