One puff and you're hooked, says nicotine research

Children who have even one puff of a cigarette can be setting themselves up as cigarette smokers in later life. That's the finding of a new study which suggests that trying just one cigarette can set up a neural pathway which makes kids predisposed to smoke in the future.

The research by UCL and Cancer Research UK into the smoking habits of 2000 11-16 year olds in South London over a five year period found that children who had a single cigarette at the tender age of 11 were twice as likely to become smokers by the time they reached 14.
