Red Faces After Radio Safety Ad August 24 2006 Teens find sex tips following Home Office advice
www.thinkyouknow.co.uk is an entirely different website, full of information about sexual services, porn and other adult content. Unfortunately for the Home Office, which ran radio commercials aimed at raising teenagers' awareness of online dangers, it's tricky to tell the difference between the two web addresses without seeing them written down. The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint against the advert for failing to make clear how the URL was spelled, commenting '... a significant effect of the ad was to indirectly publicise services unacceptable for broadcast'. The Raisingkids team checked out www.thinkuknow.co.uk (run by the Government's new Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) and, despite the unfortunate promise on the homepage that 'all hot topics are covered', it's actually a good resource for teens and parents. www.thinkuknow.co.uk covers mobiles, blogging and gaming sites, with an area for teenagers to report if they feel uncomfortable or worried about someone they're chatting to online. There's also plenty of information and support for parents. And if you're concerned about typing errors, there's no need to worry. We've checked out the other site too, only to find it's mysteriously gone offline!
