Tragic Beslan mother gives birth to little girl

beslan school building Salimat Suleimanova describes her ordeal at Beslan, and her joy at her new born daughter.

The 2004 seige on the school in Beslan, southern Russia, by Chechen separatists left 344 hostages dead, over half of them children.

Salimat Suleimanova was given the agonising choice to escape the school with her five month old baby or stay with her seven year old son Shamil. She saved herself and the baby, but Shamil was among those killed in the final siege.

Soon after Salimat discovered she was pregnant, and she gave birth in May this year to a daughter, named Leila. Strangely, the newborn bore a birthmark on her face, which resembles the wounds of her dead brother. The doctor who delivered Leila attributes this mark to the trauma of the siege.

Salimat's husband Igor remarked: " Yes, she has this mark on her but everything else is fine and she has such lovely dimples. I love Leila so much."
