Who'll Care For The Carers?
August 24 2005
Child carers unsupported

family Many young people who care for a close family member suffering a disability are not receiving the support they need from schools, a survey suggests. A 2001 census carried out by the children's charity NCH, put the number of young carers at around 175, 000. Many of these children may be in the position of having to care for younger siblings as well, if the disabled parent is unable to.

"These children have a lot of responsibility and are under a lot of pressure", said George McNamara, NCH policy officer.

Of those children questioned by NCH, a quarter said their education had suffered, and 30% that they had been bullied because of their position. Many schools, whilst recognising the situation these children are in, do little to offer support, and pupil/carer Sam complains that teachers "could do more if they understood what it's like."
