Socks Again?
November 23 2005
Grandparents despair at Xmas gifts

socks If you're putting together ideas for Christmas gifts for the grandparents, perhaps you should think about surprising them this year. According to a survey this week, two thirds of Britain's over 50s have to 'feign delight' when opening their presents.

The report, by Saga Home Insurance, shows that grandchildren's old-fashioned notion of what their grandparents would like for Christmas - candles, slippers, socks - are most likely to be binned or recycled.

20% of the 2200 people surveyed admitted to selling things on at a car boot fair, and over 25% thought that sending their younger relatives a present list might help matters.

'Many of today's over 50s are seeking out a more active and challenging lifestyle, but younger members of the family are slow to catch on,' said Andrew Goodsell, Saga's Chief Executive. 'Regardless of their age, everyone appreciates a present which is personal to them and their interests. Why not try Salsa lessons instead of slippers, for example?'
