Triplets From Two Wombs
December 21 2006

The miracle mum who stunned doctors

3 babiesWhen 23-year-old Hannah Kersey had her first child, doctors discovered that she was suffering from a rare condition in which she had not one, but two wombs. The London mother was told that it would be extremely unusual for her to become pregnant in both wombs. So imagine their surprise when this week Hannah gave birth to triplets – twins from one womb and another baby from her second womb.

The three girls, Ruby, Tilly and Gracie were all born within hours of each other at the Chase Farm Hospital in north London, weighing between 2 and 2.6lbs.

'We are just over the moon at how healthy and happy the girls are,' Hannah told the Daily Mail. 'They are three lovely and incredible children, all with very different personalities. Gracie seems to be the ringleader - maybe because she grew up in her own womb….Ruby is very laid back and quiet, happy to sit and watch what is happening around her. But Tilly, who was the baby that struggled to survive inside me, is a real fighter, wanting to keep up with her sisters and not be left out.'

Doctors think that Hannah is the first ever reported case of a woman giving birth to triplets in two wombs. Hannah's gynaecologist said; 'To actually have uterus didelphys is hugely rare, to conceive a single baby in both wombs is even more incredible - and triplets is really unheard of!'
