Fish Oil Supplements In The Womb
December 21 2006

Pregnant women 'boost' their unborn babies' coordination

pillsScientists researching the benefits of taking fish oils during pregnancy believe that in high doses, supplements can boost children's coordination. A study of 98 pregnant women by the University of Western Australia found that women who took a large dose of fish oils saw a significant improvement in hand-eye coordination when their children became toddlers than women who took no supplements.

The children of the women who took supplements also showed an improvement in both brainpower and vocabulary.

Professor Susan Prescott, who led the study, reports: 'These preliminary data indicate that supplementation with a relatively high-dose fish oil during the last 20 weeks of pregnancy is not only safe but also seems to have potential beneficial effects that need to be explored further.'
