Product placement creeps into children's literature

cathy's book - cover detailCunning make-up manufacturers have secured a new way to get into the minds of teenage girls with the advent of product placement in teen novels.

Cathy's Book, a new book out for teenage girls, includes product placement for the make-up company Cover Girl. The storyline includes tips for using the makeup. In return Cover Girl agreed to feature the book on its website.

Esther Rantzen, president of Childline, told The Times today: 'I always get uneasy when the line between editorial and advertising gets blurred.' But the book's publisher remains unabashed saying they found the criticism 'disappointing'.
