David Beckham’s pole position as the UK’s top sporting hero, seems to be on the wane. A new survey of children’s favourite sporting icons by Tesco, today found Chelsea strike Frank Lampard to be the No 1. A thousand children aged between 11 and 16 voted in the survey which placed Lampard top of the pops, with Paula Radcliffe and Andrew Flintoff in second and third places respectively. Beckham slipped in as the UK's fourth most popular sports star.

As for parents, Muhammed Ali was the sporting hero of choice for the over 16’s.
