Most Parents Smack
September 20 2006

Majority in favour of smacking, but confused on legality

crying childOne in seven parents in this country smack their children. That's the sobering results of a survey by ITV to accompany its programme 'I Smack and I'm proud' which airs this week. The results show an overwhelming support for the right of parents to discipline their children in the way they see fit. 80% of the parents believed in the right to smack - while almost three quarters felt that any ban on smacking would lead to a deterioration in children's behaviour.

The survey also showed that parents were confused about changes to the law regarding smacking. Just 43% understood the current laws correctly - that physical chastisement was acceptable as long as it didn't leave a mark. The rest of those surveyed either believed that smacking was actually illegal, or that there were no restrictions against it.
