Deafness Threat To Kids
July 20 2006

Children could go deaf 30 years earlier than parents

listening to musicKids whose ipods are welded to their ears could find themselves going deaf up to 30 years earlier than their parents! That's the startling point made by a new campaign to make children and their parents aware of deafness risks.

A survey conducted by Deafness Research UK and Specsavers found that 14% of those surveyed spend up to 28 hours a week listening to music through headphones.

'Many young people are regularly using MP3 players for long periods of time and are frighteningly unaware of the fact that loud noise can permanently damage your hearing,' explained Vivienne Michael, Chief Executive of Deafness Research UK.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, noise levels exceeding 105 decibels can damage hearing if endured for more than 15 minutes, but most of us don't know how loud 105 decibels actually is. In fact, a personal stereo on loud or a car stereo will be in excess of 105 decibels.
