Half-Baked Truths
February 20 2006

Has cake baking fallen off the family agenda?

wooden spoons Poor old working mothers - it seems they can do no right. Not only have we heard today that putting careers ahead of parenthood is leading society down the swanee, but now it seems they're also responsible for depriving a generation of children of some of the basic pleasures of childhood. A new survey conducted by Waitrose Food Illustrated, apparently found that two thirds of people never bake - and from that deduces that children are no longer able to enjoy the traditional pastime of 'licking the spoon'.

A closer look at the report data shows that it surveyed of 1000 adults over the age of 20, rather than parents specifically. So while the findings found that two thirds of British people 'never baked', here at Raisingkids we find it hard to believe that the results accurately reflect family life. Do you think it's true that more than one in 10 mothers in Northern Ireland never bake for their family? Or that nine out of ten family homes don't possess kitchen scales or a measuring jug? No - neither do we!
