Primary School Results Buried?
September 19 2006

Minister denies timing issue over results release

girl reading bookThe Education Secretary, Alan Johnson, has been forced to deny that he tempered the effect of this year's poor primary school results by releasing them on the same day as the GSCE results.

Emails from the Department of Education released to the press show that civil servants had warned the Ministry that the release of both sets of results on the same day was a clash that hadn't happened on previous years. Mr Johnson's aides replied saying that they 'positively want' the results to be issued on the same day.

There is a code of practice which states that such figures should be released at time 'which promotes widespread access and informed debate.'
