Junk Food Mums Selling To Kids September 19 2006 Headmaster puts a stop to mums' school railing campaign
Pupils at Rawmarsh Comprehensive in Rotherham, South Yorks, had switched to healthy school meals in response to Jamie Oliver's School Dinners campaign and had been prevented from leaving school at lunchtime to buy takeaways. Incensed that their children were being fed 'disgusting rubbish' such as jacket potatoes and sandwiches, mums Julie Critchlow and Sam Walker began taking orders for chips and burgers from pupils through the school railings. 'This is all down to Jamie Oliver,' said Sam. 'I just don’t like him and what he stands for. He’s forcing our kids to become more picky about their food.' Oliver, when told about the parent protest, responded in typically blunt fashion saying; ' If these mums want to effectively shorten the lives of their kids and others’ kids, then that’s down to them. What people don’t realise is that junk food doesn’t just help make our children fat, it’s also a growing cause of malnourishment.' Finally – after the issue received nationwide coverage in the press and on TV – headmaster John Lambert stepped in to call a halt to the pair's actions. ' We have agreed not to comment and will not be delivering takeaways today,' Julie told The Sun.
