Half Of 10-Yr-Olds Have Mobile
September 19 2006

...and by the time they're 12, almost all have one!

woman with mobile phoneThe inexorable rise of the mobile phone presence in our children's lives has been revealed by a new report which shows that half of all 10-year-olds have a mobile, and by the time they're 12 over 90% own one. The Mobile Life Report, commissioned by Carphone Warehouse, looked into the growing importance of mobile phones in children's lives.

Owning a mobile made 80 per cent of the young people surveyed, feel safer when they go out. Parents also feel the phones help them as well – more than 70% of parents used mobile phones to keep tabs on the location of their children.

'A mobile phone is a safety mechanism for adolescents when they know they're in a crisis, like a missed bus, stolen property or getting lost, but it has its limits,' says Raisingkids.co.uk's Dr Pat Spungin, who contributed to the report. 'A mobile phone is no help when it comes to deciding who to trust or whether to get in a car with someone who's been drinking.'
