School's Suncream Ban
July 19 2006

Allergy fears put suncream on the banned list

woman in sunglassesA primary school in Suffolk has banned its pupils from taking suncream to school over allergy fears. The school was worried that staff could be threatened with legal action if a child suffering from an allergy used another pupil's suncream and suffered an allergic reaction.

The mother of a seven year old girl at the school told reporters: 'I feel very frustrated that I am not allowed to protect my daughter. There is a history of skin cancer in my family and I am worried it might affect Sophie unless she is thoroughly protected from the sun.'

Meanwhile, pupils at a Yorkshire school have been given the afternoons off this week in the run up to the school holidays – because of the heatwave. Teachers at the Scarcroft Primary School in York said that temperatures at the school had become uncomfortably high and as a result children would be sent home at lunchtime this week.
