Europe’s Perfect Mothers? July 19 2005
At least that's what the French scientists say!
In a move guaranteed to cheer up the French after losing the Olympics to London, a Parisian newspaper is this week trumpeting French women as the ‘champions of Europe’ for their fertility and all-round gorgeousness. Sociologists and statisticians came up with some compelling statistics that they say results in Europe’s perfect female. French women produce more babies than us (1.9 per woman, compared to 1.7 in Britain) and they live longer – reaching an average age of 83. ‘The French woman; at work, seductive and fertile’, hailed the daily paper Liberation. However you’d have to take the findings with a pinch of salt – after all, the researchers, and the paper in question are French! François de Singly, an eminent family sociologist, is quoted in Liberation as saying: ‘The typical French woman is a mother but understands the need to use her educational achievements, keep her career and preserve her qualities of seduction.’ Is that all?!
