Dogs Are A Child's Best Bet
December 18 2006

Reading aloud to dogs can boost children's reading skills

listening dogsIt's the latest educational trend wowing parents and kids in countries as far away as Canada and Japan, and now reading with dogs is coming to the UK. Proponents believe that the simple act of getting children to read aloud to their dogs, can help improve their reading speed as well as their confidence.

'“The animals are not judgmental. If a child mispronounces a word, they are not going to laugh at them or make fun of them like other children might,' said Kathy Klotz, executive director of Intermountain Therapy Animals, a charity based in Utah. The charity's 'reading education assistance dogs' or Read for short, work with over 500 children in schools across America and Canada.

Apparently the charity has just had one of its volunteers move to Cornwall to start up a scheme, so expect Reading With Fido to turn up at a school near you next year!
