...a baby horse, that is

It's not quite the silly season, but we loved the story today about a horse saved from certain death when its foal alerted passers-by to its mother's plight. Locals were able to come to the rescue after the foal began baying for help in a field near Durham. When someone went to investigate what the matter was, the foal led them to its mother, who had become stuck in a slurry pit.

'The pit where the horse had fallen was partly filled with mud and filthy water and we wanted to get her out of there as quickly as possible as the animal was becoming extremely distressed,' said the local Fire Brigade. 'Thankfully it managed to walk out of the pit at the end of the rescue operation.'

Local sawmill owner Bob Cromar told the BBC, 'It was a touching scene when the mother was reunited with the foal. It was only a week old but was standing next to the pit throughout crying for its mother.'
