Curriculum may change to include British values lessons

school corridor Following the July 7 bombings, the government is looking at the secondary school curriculum to see whether 11-16 year olds should receive compulsory lessons on 'core British values'.

The Education Minister, Bill Rammell told the Today programme, 'There is a need for a debate and the essential values already taught in citizenship classes, like freedom, fairness, civil responsibilities, democracy are there. 'But they are not developed and understood in the way they developed in terms of Britain's cultural and social history.'

The government is going to review the curriculum to see whether additional lessons will help youngsters develop an understanding of shared British values.
