Getting kids to read books on their mobiles

icue graphic (phone and books) The next time you see a teenager fascinated by something on their mobile phone, it's as likely that they're reading the latest Philip Pullman as a text from their best m8. A new invention was launched this week allowing mobile phone users to store and read entire book collections on their phone.

I-Cue uses a method of speed reading, called tachistoscope, to make it both easy and comfortable to read a book on a phone. The system works on the basis of flashing one word at a time on the screen at a speed controlled by the user. In the past it has even been used by the US Air Force to help pilots identify enemy craft at high speed!

Sally Gritten, managing director of Harper Collins, said: 'People, and in particular kids, are far more open to the idea of using their mobile phones for a variety of purposes - they're already using them to play games, watch TV clips, and send photos to their friends. Reading off your mobile phone is the natural next step. But it has to be comfortable and easy. 'We plan to put some of our most popular titles on ICUE for readers of all ages, and we hope to attract many new audiences, including teenagers who are traditionally very hard to interest in books.'

ICUE are offering a free copy of Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' for anyone who texts ICUE to 64888
