Test Your Biological Clock
October 13 2005

New fertility test can predict how long women will remain fertile

clock face A simple blood test, devised by scientists, will soon be able to tell a women how long she will remain fertile. The test, which is expected to be widely available by January, will be able to predict how many years are left to a woman to try and become pregnant.

The test was developed by leading fertility expert, Professor Bill Ledger of Sheffield University. He made headlines earlier this year by warning the UK of an 'infertility timebomb' waiting to strike as women put off having children for longer.

It's expected that the test will work by measuring hormone levels produced by the ovaries and showing when that ovarian function is dropping off.

A spokesperson for the company producing the test said; 'Women have a fixed number of eggs, but the overall lifecycle varies. This will be a test to see where they are in the cycle of fertility. In crass terms it will say, '"Should I hurry up or have I got plenty of time?"'
