Embryologist Made Allergic To Husband
July 11 2005
Pioneering treatment gives fertility worker her first baby

woman in mask An embryologist whose life work was helping other couples have children has had her first baby after years of miscarriage. Kathryn Berrisford, who worked for Nottingham's CARE fertility clinic had four miscarriages when her boss suggested a controversial new treatment.

The embryologist was immunised with her husband's white blood cells, effectively making her allergic to her husband. This was required as Ms Berrisford and her husband both had similar antigens in their blood, which stopped her immune system from protecting her baby once she became pregnant.

'Although it is a minority of women that this treatment can help, a simple test can tell you if you are suitable,' she told The Mail. 'It was like a miracle because when you have really thought that you can't have a child of your own and to be in despair about it, to actually then get it is amazing.'
