The Return Of Rupert
January 10 2006

Golden oldie makes TV comeback

rupert bear The vintage charms of Rupert the Bear have been given a Trinny and Susannah-style overhaul for the character's return to our TV sets. Rupert, who first appeared in the Daily Express comic strip in 1920, will be updated for a modern audience of children. Happily the yellow and black stripey scarf remains, but his new look is much more 'cuddly'.

Rupert's official fan club, The Followers of Rupert, have given their seal of approval to the bear's new look. 'We are all aware of the happy coexistence of the "classic" Winnie the Pooh, as drawn by E.H. Shepard, and the "Disney Pooh" enjoyed by so many children. We are confident that Rupert's long, distinguished history and integrity will ensure that he will also be here to welcome the beginning of the 22nd century,' the club said.

The rights to the new TV show, which will be produced by the company that gave us Dangermouse, were sold to Channel 5 yesterday.
