Fish Oil Boosts Behaviour
December 9 2005
New study shows 'dramatic' improvement

pills The latest study into the effects of fish oil supplements on behaviourally-challenged children suggests that dramatic results can occur simply by giving children a daily dose of the oil.

A study of 65 children carried out in conjunction with the Sure Start programme in Durham found that while 47% of the children in the study were poorly behaved, at the end of the five month study only 4% of the children remained in that category.

'Some two-year-olds went from having a vocabulary of 25 single words to being able to use whole sentences,' explained Dr Madelaine Portwood, Durham's senior educational psychologist who led the research. 'Others were able to sit down and concentrate for the first time in their lives. But perhaps the most significant advantage of this project is that the improvements in behaviour and concentration in the children have facilitated a much stronger bond between the parent and the child.'

Following the five month experiment, the children who had taken the supplement of Eye q smooth - which contains both omega-3 and omega-6 oils, had made the equivalent of nine months' improvement in expressive language ability - compared to the control group which made the improvement you'd expect in a five month period.
