Your body will undergo major changes during your pregnancy. So it's important to set aside some 'you' time to relax and unwind.
So Tense! Research has shown that if you are tense and anxious during pregnancy, there is an increased chance that you will have a tense and anxious baby, so there's a real incentive to learn how to relax!
Try this little exercise alone in a quiet space daily. Lie on the floor using pillows and cushions for back support. Begin by tightening the muscles in your feet for a few seconds and then relaxing them. Then work your way up your body repeating this with every muscle group, i.e. calves, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, chest, arms and shoulders, and finally your face. You should find yourself utterly relaxed at the end of this exercise - or asleep!
Relax
A good habit to get into is to be aware of your breathing. Breathing deeply and slowly has an incredibly calming effect. It can also be used to significant effect, when you're in labour, as a form of pain relief.
Stay In Touch One of the best ways to relax is with a massage and many massage therapists now specialise in pregnancy massage. Regular massage can help to improve your circulation and to avoid swollen ankles and feet.
Alternatively, if your budget doesn't spring to it, ask a friend or your partner to rub away the knots in your shoulders. Even having someone stroke your hair can easy away tension.
