Whether you've planned for a hospital delivery or not, you should pack a bag a month or so in advance of your delivery date.
In The Bag A large overnight bag should provide plenty of room for all you'll need, so there’s no need to dust off the old suitcase. Keeping the bag in a well known place to you and your birth partner is good idea - so you’ll know where it is in the rush. If your birth partner doesn't live with you, make sure they have a spare key so they can get your bag for you in the event that you go into labour away from home.
The Bare Necessities
Whatever you decide you will personally need, every hospital bag should contain these basics:
2 front opening nighties
1 bath towel
1 dressing gown and a pair of slippers
Nursing bras and nursing pads
Thick absorbency sanitary towels
Supply of comfortable cotton pants (larger than your usual size!)
All your toiletries
Going home outfits for both you and Baby (you'll still need maternity wear).
Creature Comforts It is not unusual for labour to go on for some time, particularly with a first child, so bringing things with you that will help you relax and keep you occupied is a good idea. A hot-water bottle for contractions, aromatherapy oils, flannels for cooling down and even ice to suck can all come in handy. You may also want to bring your own pillow for comfort in case you have an overnight stay (and earplugs to keep some of the noise of a busy maternity ward out!).
For Baby And For You
If you're going to be driven home from the hospital you will definitely need an new infant car seat, as you won't be allowed to leave the hospital without one! Check if the hospital provides nappies and bottles and formula milk if you're not planning on breast-feeding; you'll need to bring your own supplies if they don't. Other useful things you could bring with you are warm socks, a loaded camera, change for the telephone, your address book, something to read, snacks and last, but definitely not least, your birth plan!
