Members Tips: World Book Day costume ideas

child in dumbledore costumeWorld Book Day comes but once a year, but it's the kind of event to drive fear into any parent's heart - what costume do you make for your child. Do you give in and let them go as a Power Ranger or get creative? Raisingkids' members share their moments of inspiration.

My younger son wants to go as Hodgeheg!!! He read the book quite recently and really enjoyed it and won't budge. He has some brown trousers and a brown woolly jacket that I have sown about 20 cardboard spikes to the back of. He painted the spikes brown and black and they look quite effective! I'll paint his face on the day and hope that he looks ok.
L ast year he went as Jack (and the giant beanstalk). I made him a brown cape and hat (out of old curtains) and a bag for his beans and wonder webbed a green and brown beanstalk up the leg of his trousers. I was really pleased, especially as originally he'd wanted to go as Sully (the BIG blue furry monster out of Monsters Inc!).

I needed some ideas for my daughter's Matilda outfit and I have had a good old rummage around the house and have found a check pinafore she doesn't wear anymore, brown pumps, ribbon bow, flat school bag in one hand and a big book in the other, complete with a denim jacket.

My daughter changed her mind from being Gabriella from High School Musical and is now going as Pocahontas! I bought her a cheap dressing up outfit online and she has long dark hair so I will be allowing her to got to school with it down for once!

My son went as Jack Sparrow and looked awesome! My daughter - who had been going as Luna Lovegood - went as Daphne from Scooby Doo. I managed to get her a purple dress, boots and tights for £8! She adores the boots and will get lots of use out of them. I spray painted her hair orange and have to say, it actually looked good!

My daughter wants to go as Matilda as well! We are just doing a dress and a hair-ribbon, and I shall make her a badge that says Crunchem Hall School...because my creativity is exhausted right now.

My eldest son is going as George from George's Marvellous Medicine. That's jeans and a t shirt plus this afternoon I cut out a cardboard medecine bottle and painted brown and cut out spoon covered in silver foil. He did want to go as Willy Wonka but we just couldn't find top hat and tails.
