Members' Tips: Teachers' Presents

teacher at blackboard The end of the school year (or term) is approaching and you may be thinking of showing your child's teachers, teachers' assistants or playgroup leaders your appreciation. But what should you get them? Our members come to the rescue with some inventive ideas for teachers' presents.

Green Fingers
I'm going to buy some terracotta plant pots, put a nice pot plant in them and have my daughter paint the pots so that they're personalised for her playgroup teachers.

Light My Fire
How about a cheap pillar candle which you can then decorate with sequins and ribbon?

Sweet Stuff
We can buy cheap candles from the pound shop and put allsorts on them. The kids love this as they have some brilliant ideas. Also we buy mugs and decorate them for the teacher. Some strange designs have been made but I think the teacher likes them.

Ribbon On Top
How about some hand-made chocolate chip cookies? Put a stack of 6 in a nice, clear bag and tie the top with ribbon? Your child could also do a label to tie on with a personalised message.

In Vino Veritas
When my boys were young enough to want to give pressies I took them to the pottery where they decorated mugs, the teachers genuinely seemed to like them ( I helped at school and didn't notice them in the bin ha ha). A bottle of wine always went down well too, quite literally but suppose it might be frowned upon by some.

Don't Forget...
I think it is nice to remember the teaching assistants too (especially if your child has special needs) The assistants often buy resources out of their own money - and are on nowhere near the teachers' salaries.
Last year, and at Christmas we took in several bottles of wine for the teachers and TAs that worked with our children. Think they appreciated them.

An Apple A Day
My child usually works only with his TA so I bought him a stress apple (think he needs it after a day with my son!)

Words Of Wisdom
Last year they made a Best Teacher Award certificate..templates in MS Office or online or some photo software do them too and they can be really nicely personalized popped into a poly pocket!
A very favourite teacher who was exceptional with our son in primary one was gifted a bonsai tree which she has to this day on her kitchen windowsill she says it's a 'constant reminder of the little boy who is like a wise old man...little but strong!' Which is truly lovely.

Artistic Bent
DD has some glass paints, I'm going to buy her cheap glasses then let her customise them!

Happy Memories
A couple of the classes at our school with very organised parents had this idea - each child gets a piece of card (say about a quarter of an A4 sheet for talking's sake). Each child decorates their card with their own special message or design for the teacher. The cards are then compiled in a memory box or binder and given as a whole to the teacher. Inexpensive & special - just takes some organisation.
