Make your own (shatterproof) baubles Take 12 balloons, torn up newspaper,
plain white paper, wallpaper paste, paint, glitter and stick on stars
(or anything else handy to decorate) plus thread to hang from the tree.
Blow the balloons up very small and tape thread
to the balloon carefully, leaving a long thread hanging. Cover the balloon
with layers of newspaper and paste, leaving to dry between each layer.
Make sure thread is left hanging out.
When you have applied about three layers of
newspaper, use one layer of plain white paper and leave to dry. Have
fun decorating the balls then hang them from your tree.

Salt dough decorations
You'll need four cups flour, one cup salt, one-and-a-half cups hot water
(or instant coffee for a brown colour).
Mix the ingredients together and knead the
dough for six-to-eight minutes. Roll it out then cut with cookie cutters
(there are some good Christmas ones available).
Place on wax paper and make several holes
with a toothpick to let air out. Don't forget to make hole at the top
to hang your decoration up.
Microwave for approx two minutes. Once they
are cool, they're ready to decorate!

Peppermint creams
Ingredients: one egg white, three cups confectioners' sugar, one teaspoon
peppermint extract.
In large bowl, whisk egg white until frothy,
but not stiff. Stir in confectioners' sugar and peppermint extract.
You may need to knead it with your hands. If
you wish to add food coloring, knead it in, and keep kneading until
the color is evenly distributed.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Form the dough into small balls, place on cookie sheet and flatten slightly.
Cover and let sit overnight in a cool, dry place, until set.
