Members' Tips: Holidays for single parents

Does being a single parent mean you have to work twice as hard? And how can you find an affordable - and fun - destination where you can have a good time as well as the kids?

UK away?
'I quite often end up taking the girls to UK family resorts on my own when hubby starts shifts in October and end up meeting lots of single mums with their kids. The sites are great but unfortunately not too sophisticated, but they are fun and I am sure you would enjoy them enormously. '

'I looked into holidays here in the UK and I was quite surprised that the costing was much the same as going abroad. '

Further afield
'I always find that Portugal is good for big or small families and when I went there we stayed in Albufeira which is great.'

'I went to Benidorm in Spain for a week, not only is the weather quite good all year round, it is also very clean, family-friendly and there is so much to do there. A lot of people are put off because it is very built up with high risers. Yes it is a bustling resort but it really is cheap to eat and drink there. '

Look out for hidden extras
'One thing to watch for when pricing holidays is the under-occupancy supplement you have to pay. Most holidays are priced on at least 2 adults sharing and you may have to pay full adult fare for your oldest child. I went on my first holiday abroad last year and it cost a fortune through paying adult fare for one of my kids. Look for resorts with single parent offers..'
