Members' Tips: Dealing with bullying
What
can you do if you think your child is being bullied? Smaller children
are likely to tell, but often pre-teens and teenagers won't readily admit
it.
Bullying can take many forms - from nasty comments
to name calling, threats, shoving and ultimately assault. What can you
do?
Talk to the school
'It's amazing how quickly things get moving once
the school realises you are prepared to take it further...'

Children have the right to go to school without
having to put up with kids who are intent on making people's lives
a misery. Demand support from the school. Go and see the head, take someone
with you if you want moral support. Get him to talk to the kids concerned
and let them know it won't be tolerated and ask them how they would like
it if it were them on the receiving end. '

Martial arts - a solution?
'I have told my son that he may 'block
and punch' as he has been taught in his karate classes if he has to. Anyone
on the receiving end of one of his punches is unlikely to come back for
more - he is somewhat short but all muscle! This tactic has worked twice
for him, both times with significantly older children... Also, all the
children around here and most of his classmates know he learns karate
- this alone is enough of a deterrent to bullies. '

Martial arts - the flip-side
'....can you find out where the bully girl does
her martial arts ?? If possible talk to the sensei .... they have very
strict protocols on bullying and may be able to help you.'
