Family Benefits: What Are You Entitled To?

If it's about raising kids... it's here! Thousands of pounds which could help you raise a healthier and happier child lie unclaimed every year.

Spot quiz:

  • What is the Back to Work Bonus and how much is it worth?
  • What is the Sure Start Maternity Grant and how much is it worth?
  • What is the Child Maintenance Bonus and Premium and how much are they worth?

Answers:

  • The Back to Work Bonus is available to people who have been receiving income support or jobseekers allowance, but are now working at least 16 hours a week and have lost some benefits because of an increase in the hours they work or the wages they receive. It is worth between £5 and £1000.
  • The Sure Start Maternity Grant is available to mothers in receipt of certain means-tested benefits or tax credits, regardless of the amount of capital or savings they have. The money is available 11 weeks before the baby's birth and mothers receive £500 per baby.
  • The Child Maintenance Bonus is a one-off payment available to people who receive child maintenance and stop receiving benefits to go back to work. Worth up to £1000, it's for parents whose child support maintenance was assessed before 2003.
  • If your claim for Child Support Maintenance was calculated after 3 March 2003 under the new rules, you will be allowed to keep the first £10 of any maintenance paid for your child(ren). This is called the Child Maintenance Premium.
